Buying Ammo in Bulk: How to Figure Cost per Round

Rifle cartridges with copper-tipped bullets standing on a reflective black surface

A 500-round case and a 50-round box are hard to compare by sticker price alone. The number that actually matters is cost per round. Once you know it, you can compare any two deals in seconds.

The formula

Total price ÷ number of rounds = cost per round.

For example, $115 for 500 rounds works out to 23 cents a round. $25 for a 50-round box is 50 cents a round. Same caliber, very different value.

Include everything you pay

Compare the total you actually pay, not just the listed price:

  • Shipping and any hazmat fees
  • Sales tax
  • Gas and time if you’re driving to a store

Compare the same load

Make sure you’re comparing like with like. A 115 grain FMJ practice round and a premium defensive hollow point are built for different jobs and priced that way. Case material and bullet type also change the price.

When bulk makes sense

  • You shoot regularly and burn through a few hundred rounds a month.
  • You’ve already tested the load in your firearm and know it runs.
  • You have a cool, dry place to store it (see our ammo storage guide).

When to buy smaller

If you’re trying a new load or a new firearm, buy one box first. A great price doesn’t help if your pistol doesn’t like the ammo.

Our bulk options

You must be of legal age to buy ammunition, and you’re responsible for following your state and local laws.
