9mm Grain Weights Explained: 115 vs 124 vs 147 Grain

9mm Luger 115 grain TMJ ammunition, 500 round case

Walk down any ammo aisle and you’ll see 9mm in three common weights: 115, 124 and 147 grain. The number is the weight of the bullet itself (one grain is 1/7,000 of a pound), not the whole cartridge. Bullet weight changes how a load feels in your hand and how it behaves downrange, so it’s worth knowing what each one does.

115 grain: the everyday range load

115 grain is the lightest of the three and the most common choice for practice. Lighter bullets usually leave the barrel faster, which gives a quick, snappy recoil impulse. It’s also typically the most affordable weight, which is why most bulk range ammo is loaded with it.

If you’re running drills, breaking in a new pistol or just putting rounds downrange, 115 grain FMJ is hard to beat. Our 9mm Luger 115gr TMJ, 500 rounds is built for exactly that.

124 grain: the middle ground

124 grain sits in the middle. Many shooters feel it has a slightly softer, more even push than 115. It’s close to the weight used in many military 9mm loads, so you’ll also see it marketed as “NATO” style ammo.

147 grain: heavy and usually slower

147 grain is the heavy end. These loads are often slower, and many are subsonic. The recoil tends to feel like a push rather than a snap, and some suppressor owners like them because they stay quieter. They can be more sensitive to how a particular pistol cycles, so test a box before you buy in volume.

Does point of impact change?

It can. Different bullet weights and speeds can land in slightly different spots at the same distance, especially with fixed sights. If you train with one weight and carry another, spend some range time confirming where each one hits.

So which should you buy?

  • For practice and high round counts: 115 grain FMJ keeps cost per round down.
  • If 115 feels snappy in your gun: try a box of 124.
  • For suppressed shooting: look at 147 grain subsonic loads.

Whatever you pick, buy enough to practice regularly. Consistent reps matter more than the number on the box. Browse our ammo to stock up.
